The Central Presbyterian Shelter in Downtown Atlanta needs our help!

For a number of years, one of our founding members, Aimee Murphy, organized a group of Sorellas to donate and serve dinner at the Central Night Shelter downtown one winter evening a year. Aimee and her husband Rob continue to volunteer and serve monthly at the shelter. Another longtime Sorella, Ana Bailie, is now the Shelter Director. Due to a cancellation of a totally different group, we have been asked to donate and serve on Sunday, February 12th. Please consider helping out. If you sign up to serve, wear your Sorella jersey!

Central Presbyterian Shelter has been operating since the 1970s and serves as a temporary winter shelter. It is open from November 1st until March 31st annually. Central (and its sister shelter next door, Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) are considered to be the two nicest shelters downtown. The waiting list is long and each guest must be pre-screened and have certain shots before they are allowed to stay. The men are extremely courteous and grateful – it is a true gift to serve them.

One of the amazing things about the shelter is that it is staffed 100% by volunteers. Each night a different organization provides dinner to the guests. Volunteer groups come from all over the greater Atlanta metro area to help. I am happy that Sorella Cycling will be one of the volunteer groups to donate and serve this year.

In order to make this effort a success, we need many volunteers to donate food and a few ladies to join me downtown (ideally wearing a Sorella jersey or T-shirt) to serve the meal. Here are the ways you can help:

1) Donate food! Prepare or buy – we need everything from baked goods to homemade casseroles. Feel free to involve your kids in this! It’s a great way for them to give back! Items can be brought downtown to the shelter or dropped off at one of the following two locations on Sunday, 2/12, before 4:30pm.

2) Serve! Come to Central Night Shelter on Sunday, Feb 12th from 5:30-8:30pm to help warm-up, serve and clean-up dinner. If you decide you can serve and will be driving downtown and live in another area of town from Decatur, perhaps you can consider adding your name/address as an additional drop off location.

3) Donate socks. Don’t have time to shop? Are you an Amazon Prime member? Just have the socks shipped
