Women's Cyclocross Clinic
August 2006
Race Report by Kari Linder
We held a super fun Women’s Beginner Cyclocross Clinic at the International Horse Park on August 26th. I expected a few people to come out, but we ended up with about 16 really cool ladies! Three of them even drove from Alabama to learn about this incredible sport. Wow!
The weather was great but warm, so we started at 9:00am to try to beat the heat. First we discussed “bad habits” when remounting. Trish and I gave GREAT examples of our bad habits and how they could be corrected. Here are a few more things we covered:
• Mounting: merging with the bike (this we practiced at a walk, then increased our speed)
• Dismounting: three different dismounts and every one had a good time practicing this one! Ah, we looked so cool!
• Lift: different lifts depending on length of arm and height.
• Carry: everyone found that perfect balance to carry their bike at a run.
• Put Down: no bike bouncers here!
• Course description and things to look for on your pre-ride.
We split into two groups where Trish watched and encouraged half the group and I worked with the other half. Several of the women got a chance to use the super cool Cannondale Cyclocross demo bikes that we were so fortunate to be able to offer. The demo bikes are blue and BEAUTIFUL!! These chicas practiced- practiced-practiced , until they looked like pros!
Finally, we created a mock cyclocross course and got a chance to try out all of our new moves. Oh, we were fast with the wind flying through our hair and we jumped those barriers in a ‘single bound’, just like…..WONDER WOMAN!!!!
Everyone took home Kalahari bars, stickers and handouts to help remember the highlights of the clinic. Check out the photos here: http://sorellacycling.myphotoalbum.com/
Please watch for the co-ed cyclocross clinic that I will hold on September 30. These clinics are great for the beginner as well as anyone who needs to brush up on their technique. (and it’s a great workout where you get to increase you farmer’s tan by 10%)
