Parkinson Criterium Race Report
Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville, GA

by Sarah Crawford

This was the first weekend after the Rock Hill Omnium that the whole cat 4 race team was together again! We were all excited about racing together again after sicknesses, work related obligation, moving, crashes, and the list goes on! Also, Betsy Austin came and rode like a champ! This race was also the second in the ALGABRA Cat 4 series races. So as new racers, we are happy to be separated from the professionals, cat 1, 2 and 3 racers to continue to learn about racing without facing the big dogs!

The course was interesting since it was not a typical criterium around a few city blocks. It zigzagged through the parking lots and road ways around the Georgia Gwinnett College campus in Lawrenceville. The first turn was literally a 180-degree turn which was hard to maneuver each time we faced that challenge. The course had some gradual elevation and then a nice screaming downhill into the last turn before an uphill to the finish/start line. The proceeds all benefited the American Parkinson Disease Association.

The race was fun with 2 primes that broke the pack up a little and helped increase the speed.  Both Amy and Gwyneth took a risk and attempted back to back breakaways in the last 3 laps of the circuit - a first for both of them. At the final sprint for the line Sarah took 1st!  Amy Lang took 8th, Gwyneth Lodge - 9th, and Pam White - 10th. We are looking forward to doing more racing together as a team and hopefully coming out with great finishes. Also, Betsy Austin came out and completed her second race! She did a stellar job of cornering and learning basic race skills.

The Frazier cycling team organized the race and did an excellent job! There were separate race designed to accommodate juniors, cat 5 men, and cat 4 women racers by providing an opportunity for them to race with peers. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together and make it such a successful event!
