Sady Springs Omnium Race Report
by Sarah Crawford

Another weekend of racing! The race team was in full swing again at the Sandy Springs Omnium. The weekend consisted of a time trial (tt), road race (rr), and a criterium (crit). Three races over a span of two days is very hard for any athlete and this weekend tested not only our physical stamina, but our mental strength as well. The summer months are quickly approaching and with that comes the hot temperatures and rising humidity.

On Saturday the tt and rr were located at Creekview HS in Canton, GA. The tt was 7 miles in length with the first half being somewhat downhill with a head wind and the second part having a few inclines. The team did a great job rolling off the start block and attacking the course. Racers were sent off in one minute intervals so there was always someone to chase! This race is always interesting since it against no one in particular, but the clock – which never lies! The placements were: Sarah -3, Gwyneth -6, Pam -9, and Amy -10.

Between races we hung out under our tent under the baking sun. Thank goodness for shade! We ate lots of food and hydrated while other Sorellas gathered to chat and we convinced some to sign up and ride in their first road race! The course was 21 miles with rolling bumps and some nice climbs up hills. The race started out slow and then it picked up pretty quickly for the last 15 or so miles. Pam, Amy, and Gwyneth all had attacks off the front of the pack during the race. Gwyneth picked a good time to attack up one of the climbs and got away from the main pack except for one lone chaser. The two racers were off the front of the pack for awhile and then another attack came to chase them down close to the finish line. This last attack strung out the main pack and made for some good sprinting for the finish line and valuable omnium points. The result of the race was: Gwyneth – 2, Sarah – 5, Amy -9, and Pam -11.

The last race of the omnium was the crit that took place at 12:05 Sunday afternoon. Talk about hot and the winds had blown in smoke from the forest fires in south GA so the environment made the race even harder. The course was 1.7 km in length with only one, count it, one downhill – which means the rest of the course was uphill. Boy did our legs feel those inclines after the hard day of racing on Saturday. The crit was 40 minutes and 3 laps in length. There were 4 premes called out during the race and each member of our team won a preme! Many attacks were made during the race and one rider made a lone breakaway. The rest of the group chased her most of the race with the occasional attacks to make each other’s legs burn with pain. The uphill finish was scattered with riders sprinting for the line! The results were: Sarah – 3, Gwyneth - 8, and Pam - 10.

With an omnium there are points awarded for each race according to your overall finish. Some races have a higher point value than others. For instance, the rr was worth more points compared to the tt. The overall omnium places were: Sarah – 2, Gwyneth – 5, Pam -8, and Amy -9.

The Sandy Springs Omnium presented by Lowe’s Mortgage and Team Cycleworks was a great local event! The courses for the races were run, fast, and exciting (well, except for those long hill climbs in Canton). The atmosphere during the criterium in Sandy Springs on Sunday was exciting and motivating with a big, loud crowd. This race was the third race in the ALGABRA Cat 4 race series. Such a great event will only grow in size and this is definitely an omnium we will compete in again!
